Hey all
Its been a bit since I posted so I wanted to give you an update.
A week ago Friday night we had Hugo and Bungee out playing and we noticed that Hugo was making a raspy sound when he was breathing. Otherwise he seemed normal. The following day, Saturday, he was progressively worse. He was struggling to breath and not moving around much. He was tiltling his head upwards and rapidly inhaling short breaths. The rasping was louder.
We rushed him to the emergency vet Sat. night and he went into an oxygen chamber right away. We had his lungs x-rayed and they were 75% filled with fluid. They kept him overnight and started injecting antibiotics. The following day we took him home and started giving him baytril by mouth. That Sunday he was markedly better but still rasping.
Monday after work he was a lot better and begging for treats!
So for the past week, we have had him quarantined in the middle of the living room using our x-pens, a bath mat, and the bottom of a beer box cut out for a litter box. He loved the new angle - he could see down the hall, and especially into the kitchen, his favorite place:)
However all three bunz have had a rough week as their playtime diminished and we had to keep shoeing Bungee away from Hugo. Hugo and Mabel tried fighting through the bars so she had to be shut in a lot more. But the good news is that every day Hugo sounded better and has been back to his old mischievious self:)
And we changed his medicine (Baytril) to a grape-flavored compound of Baytril at the same concentration, so now Hugo willingly eats it himself, (when mixed with a few seed treats).
Yesterday we reintroduced "The Odd Couple" and after a bit of being a scaredy cat (Bungee) they both settled back into their old cage together. Hugo and Bungee spent the night together.
We will be continuing Hugo's meds for the next week or so to stave off the infection. Hopefully he is not contagious anymore, it has been a whole week and it didn't make sense to keep him quarantined any more. Hopefully everything can go back to normal now!
"Being sick sucks."
